I'd never be waiting in the queue
amidst the dozens or the billions
by St. Peter's ivory gate
asking how and why and who
really hung the sun and moon
and if another star will rise
after the light begins to fade

or if every wife and man
is just a castle in the sand
made to attenuate the boredom
of a god alone in space
just an obselescene planned
at last to crumble in her hands
as if all she ever wanted
was a mirror to her face

and do my petty songs
truly transcend right and wrong?
am I just aiding and abetting
pirates of our souls' desire?
and if the world should sing along
with beat of drum and clang of gong
